[birdky] Re: turkeys in the yard

Concerning expanding range of turkeys. Late this afternoon I was surprised
with a hen turkey on the patio at the Moonlite Restaurant which is about a mile
inside the bypass. She spent quite a while looking at herself in the window.
Returning again and again to the delight of customers and employees. Perhaps
she thought there was another turkey in the window. Finally a photographer
scared her away toward the highway and we haven't seen her since.

Enjoyed watching a large gobbler strut right behind my garden this morning.
He was trailing 4 hens and hardly broke strut the entire time I watched.
I've had a couple of hens on my farm list before but this is the first mature
tom I've seen on the property. The back water has a lot of birds pushed up
out of the bottoms and hopefully some hens will set a nest or two in the
cutover woods next door. I'd love to see a flock really get established in
the
creek bottom behind my house. They seem to be expanding their range all the
time. This is another success story from the reintroduction efforts of our
state fish and wildlife agencies. Also got a nice look at a vesper sparrow
while
taking the boys fishing this afternoon.
