I watched about 125 chimney swifts drop into an old chimney in a matter of 15
minutes at sundown tonight (9/15) in Murray, Ky. They cheeped and they swirled,
and one at a time they found a route through a dinner plate size hole in the
chimney. This is the Murray Board of Education Central Office. I bet the
Superintendant has no idea about who is spending the night there!
We had wind gusts of 65 mph wind post Ike here in W. Ky. on Sunday(9/14) Lots
of trees down. I was curious about the eagle nest I keep up with on Jonathan
Creek Ky. Lake (Olive Branch Eagle). The pine tree that hosts the nest is like
a toothpick. I was so relieved to see the tree upright and the nest still
intact. AND an adult bald eagle today was perched on one of the few branches
left on the tree!!
Also, there were 116 Forster's terns on Sat. (9/13)at the Jonathan Creek
Embayment along with lesser yellowlegs, pectoral and least sandpipers.
Thinking that the storm might have made a difference, I ventured out on the
mudflat today to find a net gain of one Forster's tern(117), a Caspian tern,
and the same yellowlegs, pects, and leasts.
Relieved that nature has many reserves,
Melissa Easley
