My feeder list is dominated by House Sparrows and House Finch. The good
numbers of White-crowned I have had in the past have dwindled to 2. I
blame this on development. Anyway, when I entered the yard last evening,
a flock of House Sparrows flew up from under a feeder except one. She
was trying to fly but seemed stuck. I gathered her up and found her leg
pulled/pushed/fallen well down a hole, and stuck there. Ever since the
fore mentioned development occurred, I have been plagued with moles, and
the ground beneath the feeder is riddled with their up heaving. The
sparrow leg was in one of these holes. The slightest effort brought leg
but no foot free from the hole and off the sparrow flew. I wish I had
dug to see what the heck, but was apparently to baffled to for clear
thought. I have since wondered if a mole had hold of the leg, but I
believe I would have felt a tug. The bird appeared to have been pulled
into the hole, however. She was pinned against the ground.
