I spent about 2 1/2 hours beginning around 4:30 walking approximately 2 miles
out and back from the point where Hillside Road (take it from the park in
Powderly) crosses the Muhlenberg Rails to Trails path that runs from Central
City to Greenville. (There is a small grassy verge you can park on right next
to the trail). To my mind, the best part of the trail is east of Powderly
toward Central City, where a number of enterprising and industrious beaver have
constructed an amazing series of dams - they have created an almost continual
wetland in the past several years. The path is paved, flat and even and very
quiet to walk on. The birds I could identify were as follows:
1 yellow breasted chat
2 prothonitary warblers
1 yellow warbler
1 male Baltimore Oriole
7 male orchard orioles
1 female orchard oriole
1 first year male orchard oriole
2 male bluebirds
1 blue Grosbeak
1 Indigo Bunting
a whole lot of tree swallows and (I think) rough swallows
4 blue grey gnat catchers
1 peewee
3 titmice
2 carolina wrens
2 chicadees
1 cedar waxwing
3 robins
2 bluebirds
3 cardinals, male
a ton of male and female red winged blackbirds
a few grackles
1 flicker
1 turkey (first I have seen there)
1 great blue heron
3 Great Crested Flycathcers. Of the pair I saw, one was calling loudly and the
other was carrying an identifiable piece of snake skin - I had heard they used
it for nests, but I never expected to see one actually carrying the goods!
MIA from other walks recently were red headed and red bellied woodpeckers,
downies, mockingbirds, cat birds and thrashers, summer tanagers, king birds and
king fishers. I had also recently seen coots, Canadian Geese and Wood Ducks,
which also were not visible tonight. I got to watch about 10 muskrats over the
course of the walk either eating or swimming and 3 times I saw beaver, one of
whom stood up in the shallow water to taste a willow branch. It must not have
been al dente because he passed it up.
