I agree that the frequent rain has slowed the martins' nesting activity. I
usually see the first eggs during the first week of May here in NE Kentucky.
But this year, the birds have just begun nest building since this past
weekend. My first returning martin was late this year (April 1) by about 7
days from the average (March 24). Activity should improve dramatically when
sunny and dry conditions return.

Here at the Woodlands Nature Station in LBL (western KY), we've noticed that
our
purple martin colony is progressing more slowly than in past years. We have
a
lot of martins hanging around, but they have fewer nests built than they
usually
do by this time. And we had our first eggs about 10 days later than
normal. I
was wondering if anyone else has been noticing similar things? Or is this
something just specific to our site? I was wondering if they might be being
badly affected by all the inclement weather?
I'd love to hear anyone else's observations about their martins. Thanks so
much!
