Well I probably should have said immature but I interchange the word for first year birds. Anything that has not molted for the first time. There may be a defining item or technically a time period and if so I would tend to lean towards juvenile being the younger of the two. Since this bird is well through its first winter it is much more likely to survive through the first molt. I am thinking RSHs do not molt until they are older--past the 1 year hatch date, I think I recall around 15 months. Nothing scientific about that but we have had females in immature plumage nesting and raising young with males in full adult plumage. Eileen Eileen P.
