The Economist, Nov 3, carried an article regarding the fact that part of the
avian compass needle has been tentatively identified by German scientists.
Seems that birds have a protein called cryptochromes in their eyes so that they
can tell how their heads are aligned with respect to the earth's field, and
hence which direction to set off. For details see this article or the Public

your local libraries.
