I decided to just leave my nest boxes alone this year and not try to control in
any way which birds use them. To paraphrase someone who posted on this subject
some while back, it just makes sparrows mad without discouraging them to mess
with their nests. Today I decided to see how things were playing out so far. In
18 boxes there were 5 Blue Bird nests, one with 3 out of 5 eggs already
hatched; 2 House Sparrow nests; one Tree Swallow nest, no eggs yet; 1
chickadee, 5 eggs; 4 boxes with no nest; 4 boxes of possible but not certain
sparrow use and 1 with a small, so far unidentified nest.
On the subject of window collisions, I think it also helps to not have your
feeder straight out from a window, so that whatever window reflections a bird
might see from a feeder, it isn't of itself and other birds feeding. If you
can see your own reflection in a window from the point of view of your feeder,
so can a bird sitting on that feeder.
