Yesterday, Judy and I observed a pair of adult Bald Eagles perched
relatively close to their nest, just north of John James Audubon State Park
(in a cypress slough, between Stratman Road and the Ohio River---Stratman
Road is the first road south of the Ohio River Bridge---also known as state
road 414; if a driver is southbound, he/she should turn LEFT onto this road
after crossing the bridge; if a driver is northbound, he/she should turn
RIGHT on the last road before the approach to the bridge). Eagles have
nested successfully in this slough for several years. The nest can be
observed from a relatively large pull-off area (gravel) beside Stratman
Road; the area can accommodate several vehicles. The observation area is
far enough from the nest to eliminate any disturbance or disruption for the
birds. Although the eagles can be observed with the naked eye, binoculars
or a spotting scope will certainly enhance the observer?s experience. The
eagle nest is located among cypress trees that house approximately 50-75
Great Blue Heron nests in the spring. At the present time, one can see the
remnants of the GBHE nests from the 2007 nesting season.
During our 20-minute observation, we also observed five buffleheads (three
males, two females).
Respectfully submitted,
Bob Peak
