For our tiny corner of the world, this summer has been the richest ever for
hummingbirds. In previous years, a feeder refill would last a week or so and
would often need changing before it was all gone. Lately, the hummies have been
drinking a 2 cup feeder dry every day, with as many as 8 feeding at one time. I
don't know whether our local hummingbirds had excellent breeding success or we
have an influx of late summer wanderers or both.
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers have been a common sight in the yard all summer.
Used to just see them in spring and fall.
Cliff Swallows have been prominent here for maybe the past 2 weeks along
with the continued presence of Barn & Tree Swallows. We are surrounded by
swallows on our afternoon walks. Not many Purple Martins right around here as
of now, and I haven't seen but a few martins all summer.
