We were watching humming birds from our porch this morning when my wife jumped up and yelled "snake!" Sure enough, perfectly camouflaged and laid out along a bare Holley branch where hummers like to perch while vying for feeder time, was a juvenile black rat snake. I would've taken the snake to the barn but injured it when I knocked it from the hummer's perch with a rake. Noticing the bulge in the snake's abdomen, I cut it open to reveal a freshly swallowed RT hummer. Also noted: A beautiful male goldfinch doing his level best to keep a very demanding young cowbird fed.. Disgusting. B Scates Woodburn, Warren Co.
