Hi, Mary Schmidt and I walked the Hematite Trail in Land Between The Lakes yesterday after work. Besides finding lots of singing warbling vireos, our most interesting sighting was a female Hooded Merganser with several babies. They were paddling across the middle of Hematite Lake. We were pretty surprised because neither of us have ever seen breeding mergansers here before! Mary took a few photographs, but they were taken at a distance with a basic point-and-shoot camera. If anyone is interested in the photos, you can contact her at Lake Barkley State Resort Park, where she works as the park naturalist. She will be out of the office this weekend, but should be back next week.
