A Great Egret flew over my farm this morning but didn't land. A little later, I
spotted a Savannah Sparrow while attempting to count Killdeer chicks on the
track hoe formed high bank above my back field pond. Hearing something behind
me, I turned and startled up 6 peeps that had just landed at pond's edge.
Couldn't ID them, but it was still good to know that my own ponds are getting
some migrant shorebird visits.
In a previous post, I estimated a nearby transient lake on state 739 to be
about 75 acres. Mark Bennett's guess of 15 acres was so wildly different from
mine, I decided to measure it. I did so by downloading a map quest aerial map
of the lake area and a scroll down all the way to my farm. Even though there
was no stand water at the time the images were taken, the area which is now
under water could be determined pretty closely. By outlining the lake area in
photoshop and superimposing the outline over my own fields of known size, my
revised estimate is 37.5 acres, give or take a squiggilum amount.
