[birdky] great blue rookery

Rhonda and I floated a section of the south fork of the Licking River on
Saturday. We started just up stream from its beginning on Hinkston Creek
in Ruddles Mills (northern bourbon county) and traveled to Lair in
Harrison County. Noted were a pair of active Great Horned Owls at 10:30
in the morning; the female had caught something. We also saw a single
American Coot and a spotted sandpiper. The highlight was a sizeable
Great Blue Rookery just down stream from the mouth of Silas Creek
(Harrison County). It was located on an island that is shown on the
Delorme (page 38: A-2). I estimated 50 nests in 6-7 sycamores. 23 nests
were counted in the largest tree, but the whole tree was not visible
from our vantage point. Another tree contained 16 nest. I don't know how
many were active, but it was a happening place. A number of vultures
were patrolling the area for fall outs I suppose. Several Prothonatary
Warbler were also heard/seen in the same section. It was a very pretty
section of stream and the smallmouth bass fishing was pretty good too.
