We found roosting sandhills this evening on the mudflats of Nolin Lake at
37.340662, -86.130768, a first in 41 years of birding this area. There were
around 50 individuals.it will be interesting to see if they hang around.
Moving on, we drove to a site where we used to find multiple harriers and
short-eared owls in Grayson County; they have been absent the past two
winters, due to burning and plowing. The owners have let some of the native
grasses return, providing a large area of good habitat once again. We were
thrilled to find two short-eared owls at 37.450054, -86.141546, right where
they'd been in years past.
No harriers.
