[birdky] close encounter of the bird kind

Last week I had an odd encounter with a bird and would appreciate any insight
into the bird's possible motivation. I live near downtown in Central City but
my home is bordered on one side by an overgrown lot and across the road is a
wooded slope. I had just pulled out of my drive when I saw a small bird on
the road, which flew to a branch bordering the road as the car approached. It
was perched about 3 feet off the ground and roughly eye level to me as I was
seated in the car. My window was already open. I stopped in the center of
the lane to identify the bird. It was a phoebe, not a usual bird for my yard
list, although I hear them regularly near the downtown where there is a small
stream. It looked right back at me. Then to my surprise, it flew at me,
coming within a foot or so of my face before returning to its perch, then it
looked back at me and did it again. Was I being driven off? Since another
car was coming at that point I had to move on, but I have never read of this
behavior in a phoebe before.
