[birdky] boone co spring count

The Northern Kentucky Bird Club held their Boone Co. spring bird count on
Saturday May 13. While all totals are not available yet, it was a good day
overall with the exception of low diversity and numbers of warblers. Over 120
species were found on a cool day with occasional light rain. I'm not sure if
this scourge is statewide this year, but northern Kentucky has had incredible
numbers of forest tent caterpillars this spring. A significant majority of
trees in upland forest areas have been stripped of their leaves, the worst I
can recall. Some highlights from the count included the following:

Common Loon (2)
Great Egret (8 at East Bend Power Plant)
Great Blue Heron (21 nests at East Bend, up from 9 last year)
Hooded Merganser (female with seven young at Split Rock Conservation Park)
Black Vulture (nest with 2 eggs in a barn silo at East Bend Power Plant)
7 species of shorebirds at East Bend including Semipalmated Plover, Greater
Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, and Short-billed Dowitcher.
High numbers of Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Swainson's Thrush, and Rose-breasted
Grosbeak.
