At last a sunny day to kayak and bird in W. Kentucky. Although
breezy, I was able to cross Lake Barkley from LBL south of the bridge and
observe six American White Pelicans along with a good view of Swamp and
singing Song Sparrows. Coots and other ducks in the reserve beyond the
ridge, but a kayak does not hold a scope so I was unable to identify the
duck species.
A stop by Jonathan Creek on Ky. Lake revealed a dark morph Snow Goose
on a spit with Forster's terns, Bonaparte's and Ringbill gulls . Two
Dunlin foraged along with many Killdeer on the mudflats.
I remain amazed at the return of the Great Blue Heron. It is not
unusual to see 20 at one time anywhere on the lakes. When I first started
birding, it was a treat just to see one!!
