  Subject: Kestrel puzzle

Today I noticed my adult Kestrels going in and out of a new box I just put up
this past winter (meant to be for owls). I had been seeing them earlier at
their old box and it's now late enough that I am usually seeing young Kestrels
peeping out and anticipating their first flight. I looked in the old box and
found it contained 2 unhatched eggs and 10 pellets. I guess these eggs are
infertile for some reason and they are trying again at a new spot. I can't
figure why the eggs would be infertile or why there were only 2 of them. The
Kestrels had been producing 4 or 5 young each year. My only theory is that this
might be a young, inexperienced pair that has replaced the ones I had for the
last several years.
