John, the sloughs are on the Aurora Ferry Rd. which is located just west
(approx. 3/4-1 mi.) on KY Rt. 20, from the center of Petersburg, Boone
County, KY. When you come to AFR, you will see a sign, with arrow, "Toll
Ferry". The sloughs are at the bottom of the dip in the road - about
1/4-1/2 mi.
from Rt 20. There are 2 sloughs. The largest one, by far, is on the North
(right) side of the road and a smaller one on the south (left). The smaller
one is getting difficult to observe & to approach, due to the trees &
undergrowth starting to "leaf out". Most of the waterbirds are in the N
slough.
As you approach the bottom of the road, approach quite carefully so as not
to cause the birds to put to flight, or move rapidly to the far end of the
slough.
I usually go past the dip, up the slope to a turnaround spot (several), and
return back to the R slough, now on your L, once again being cautious.
There is a "sort-of" pull off on the left side as you return - it is a flat
widened grass area. This is where most watch the birds from. A scope is
very helpful when viewing the middle to the far end of this slough.
These sloughs have produced some very good birds over the years for many
birders. Hope this helps and good birding.
Granville
