[birdky] birding tidbits

I watched what I determined to be an immature female Sharp-shinned chase
a Bobwhite across my path at the family farm on Christmas. I am never
confident on those medium sized accipiter's; I even measured the limb it
so patiently had been setting on to better estimate the size of the
bird. Actually patient it wasn't, but quite agitated by its lack of
success is more like it. The flight of the quail was the fastest I have
ever seen one of those fly. The walk also included six species of
woodpecker, all but the Pileated.

Lexington CBC (20th). I haven't seen a tally yet, but the weather wasn't
great (very dark all day). it was the fewest birds in total numbers I
have ever counted, only 236 starlings, but we had at least 73 species at
last word. My best on the day were singles of American Coot, and
Northern Pintail, 3 Great-Horned Owls, and 2 Fox Sparrows.
