[birdky] birding by horse & wagon

Yesterday four of us from the Somerset area had the unique experience of spending the day birding from a horse drawn wagon (complete with comfortable cushy seats!) through Amish country in Monroe County. Our guide Nathan Beechy is a good birder and he's very knowledgeable on the plants and flowers of the area.

After a morning of birding he took us to his home where his wife had prepared a tasty meal.

We enjoyed 9 warbler species, tanagers, grosbeaks and Swainson's Thrush. We had a very cooperative Red-tailed Hawk, which sat straight across the road from the wagon and went about the business of hunting; completely ignoring us. On a good day I think a lot more warblers would be possible, because we visited a lot of good habitat.

Nathan is considering doing birding/nature tours and our trip was the first run. He already does an herb walk in the spring. We all had a great time and if you get the chance to do it; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Birding smiles . . . . .
