Mitch Sturgeon and I had the good fortune of arriving at McElroy about 10
minutes before Brainard relocated the ruff. Aaron had also seen it previously
today. The bird was near the lane at the south end as reported by Dave
yesterday. The flock scattered about 5 minutes after we found it, and then the
steady rain set in. We birded in the shelter of the barn until it really began
raining in earnest. The number of birds has increased dramatically recently.
It's hard to predict how long the water will last, but there's plenty there
right now. A week or two is certain.
Other birds present included:
red-br mergansers
least sandpiper
western sandpiper
black-bellied plover
semipalmated plover
spotted sandpiper
both yellowlegs
long-billed dowitcher
surf scoter
I'll let Brainard add details as he sees fit.
