[birdky] belated post: Avocet at Campbell Co.

There was an American Avocet along the shoreline at the Manhattan Harbour
Marina at Dayton (Campbell Co.) KY, back on the evening of July 31. I first
saw it at about 7:30 PM, realized I didn't have my camera with me, so I ran
back home to get it. When I returned I was able to get a number of pretty fair
photos. However, the Avocet was very skittish and after a lot of nervous
bobbing, eventually took flight. It circled and called for an extended period,
probably at least ten minutes, while being occasionally buzzed by Barn
Swallows.
While circling it made some very wide arcs, definitely putting it into Ohio
territory (Cincinnati's East End). It did eventually land back on the sandy
shoreline by the point where I had first seen it. I returned at daybreak the
next morning and could find no sign of the Avocet.

Present at the marina on Wednesday morning August 6 was one fly-by Caspian
Tern. That evening there were 4 Wood Ducks, 1 Great Blue Heron, 1 Green Heron,
30 Barn Swallows and 2 Eastern Kingbirds.

Today (August 8) at Newport, there was still some Cliff Swallow nesting
activity with at least one going to one nest at the I-471 Bridge, and about 7
others flying back and forth between the bridge and above the Newport on the
Levee (no sign of them landing on any of the nests there). There were also 5
fledgling Barn Swallows on an anchor-line for the Hooter's barge. I noticed the

20 or so adult Barn Swallows tended to feed lower by flying low over the levee
grass, while the Cliff Swallows were foraging higher up about 70 feet or so
above the levee and above the river.
