[birdky] Western Kentucky and Barren Eared Grebe/Terns

Highlights from the dams area and the Mississippi River:

4 September 2008

KY DAM AREA
Lesser Black-backed Gull
Laughing Gull

FULTON COUNTY/LAKE 9

MOTTLED DUCK
An individual photographed and appearing to be of the A.f.maculosa race present
September 4 and 5. Thanks to Hap and Ben for posting the reports. The bird
was associating with Mallards both days and feeding along the eastern side of
the lake. I viewed it from the lane area at the south end and accessed from
the road at the base of the levee. The flock moved north on the lake both days
and spent time loafing at the mound/point on the west side of the lake near the
grove of cypress trees. A walk north along the lake may be required to find
this bird.

This will be Kentucky's 3rd record if accepted, the first being 2 birds at the
same location which I observed on 22 March 2000.

Also observed at Lake 9 on the 4th were a Northern Pintail, American White
Pelican, and 1200 Great Egrets which I counted just before dark in addition to
a few Snowies and Little Blue Herons.

MISSISSIPPI RIVER/FULTON

5 September 2008

LAKE 9
MOTTLED DUCK

American White Pelican (90+)
American Coot
Bobolink (flyover)

I also observed groups of previously reported shorebirds and the 5 Northern
Pintails as I worked my way up the river. I was about 2 1/2 hours behind the
other group working upstream, but thanks to Mark Monroe for calling to alert me
to the presence of the Swallow-tailed Kite. Unfortunately, I wasn't in a
position to see the bird as it moved down river.

SMITHLAND DAM
Laughing Gull (juv)

KY DAM
Lesser Black-backed Gull (2)
Laughing Gull (2)

The passage of the front and clearing skies resulted in a nice movement of
birds with highlights from a lakewatch/skywatch at Barren Reservoir this
afternoon below.
