[birdky] Warren County 20 April 2008

Aaron Hulsey and I made a quick check of McElroy this morning.  Shorebird 
numbers were again low with a few of the previously reported species present.  
Aaron has seen a Dunlin the past couple of days which I missed.  

The recently arrived breeding birds are busy nest building in the back yard.  
This afternoon I watched a pair of gnatcatchers putting the finishing touches 
on theirs, and a Yellow-throated Warbler was stripping fiber from an old poke 
plant and making trips to the top of a sycamore along the creek.  

The resident Cooper's Hawks which have nested along the creek behind my house 
for years have built right in the backyard this spring, affording great views 
from inside the house.  This afternoon one landed with prey on a fallen split 
ash.  I watched expecting it to begin plucking, but after a few minutes it flew 
toward the nest and left the prey on the butcher block.  Nothing disturbed the 
hawk and I assume it plans to return later.  After it left I checked and found 
the victim to be a starling, great choice.

Other yard birds this afternoon included White-eyed Vireo, Wood Thrush, Pine 
Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, and a fly-over Osprey.
