[birdky] WW CROSSBILLS

Well, we finally saw the crossbills today! After my sister saw those in her
yard in southern Ohio, we decided they would probably be found in Shawnee State
Park, not far below Portsmouth. So, a cousin & his friend went over yesterday
and found them, met us today, and we found them also! They were on Pond Lick
Road, actually feeding heavily on the ground, underneath the hemlocks. We
spotted some in a tree near the road and stopped at what we thought was being
too close. But within a few minutes, about 6 or 8 of the approx. 2 dozen total
birds foraged on the edge of the road, right up to within 8 or 9 feet of the
right front of the car. Fantastic view!!!! I know this is not a Kentucky
sighting, but anyone interested in nailing these down as a life bird, I feel
they may be in the area for sometime, as there are lots of hemlocks in Shawnee.
It appears the cars run over the cones and the birds just heavily feed on the
seed, not having to go to the cones themselves. Let me know if you need
assistance.
