[birdky] Transient Lakes

McElroy Lake is down to the ditch and puddles as of this afternoon, 23 May
2008. There were at least 4000 birds present when I arrived with well over
half being Semipalmated Sandpipers. A Peregrine Falcon stirred them up before
I had a chance to look through but half the birds and many left. Tom Durbin
arrived just in time to see a fly-over sub-adult Mississippi Kite. Other birds
of interest present at McElroy today include:

Gadwall
Ring-necked Duck
Greater Scaup
Surf Scoter
Ruddy Duck
Black-bellied Plover
Black-necked Stilt
Sanderling
Short-billed Dowitcher
Long-billed Dowitcher
Wilson' Phalarope
American Pipit

There were 2 Lark Sparrows singing across the road from each other along Vance
Rd.

There was also a pair of Black-necked Stilts at Chaney Lake this morning with
about 75 Semi Sandpipers.

Yesterday, 22 May , I checked Morgan's Pond in Christian County to find very
few shorebirds. The water level is fairly stable there with little shorebird
habitat. I did see a pair of Black-necked Stilts with one incubating.

There were no shorebirds present at Guthrie Swamp but I did see both adult Bald
Eagles in the vicinity of the nest. I couldn't see the nest to check for
chicks due to foliage.
