Got a first of season scarlet tanager today. Have been seeing blue-gray
gnatcatchers and yellow-rumped warblers for awhile. Cowbirds raid my feeders
regularly , but the goldfinches outnumber them. I see and hear a nice male
eastern towee singing early each morning , on his high perch in the juniper
tree nearby. The house wrens are setting up houses now, a kestrel pair used my
nest box again. I saw a squirrel run up the pole to the box and thought it
might be raiding the nest so I put about 4 feet of flashing around the pole. It
was great justice to see it falling off the pole the next morning and giving
up. I think the kestrel female laid eggs again because the pair has been around
since that squirrel raid. Nice spring.
