[birdky] Re: Sora and Chuck-Will's-Widow

I've had a Chuck-will's-widow come sit on a front deck post and begin calling
each of the past 4 nights at 8:15 CDT in BG. It has been during twilight, so
I have to move stealthily as I can to see
his silohoutte (-1sp) on the post toward the W after-glow. One night a 2nd one
came to the post and
seemed to force the first one off it. I then realized by it's call that it was
likely in training with its
parent as its call was very immature and undeveloped. i have also had similar
experiences with
a family of Wood Thrushes over the past week . . . a very sophisticate regimen
of voice lessons
by parents for their young ones. The most of my favorite birds I've had here in
years . . also sing
beautifully each morning. Fingers crossed they don't leave me.

JDM in Garrett Holler off Hwy 185, 5 mi. N of BG

Subject: [birdky] Sora and Chuck-Will's-Widow

Have confirmed for two consecutive days a Sora in Fayette County in the
enclosed garden center at the Meijer's in Hamburg. The worker's there have
been seeing the bird daily for 2 weeks and called it a "chicken like bird" that
sometimes will walk right over their feet. The bird actually walked right in
front of my cart today, stopped briefly, looked at me, then went under some
potted plants and I couldn't find it again. It is amazing how they can
disappear when they want to!

This evening around 9:15 we had a Chuck-will's-widow calling on our back
property and Dave and I sat there being entertained by the call wishing there
was a way we could get the bird called in closer when I thought I heard a mouse
near the open back door and shut it quickly and a bit loud. This obviously
spooked the bird and caused it to come right up beside the garden next to the
house. We both looked at each other in shock when it started calling from
right next to us!

What a great day with two Lifers for me and a new State bird for Dave. Dave
owes me two nice evenings out now for the new birds as that is our arrangement
and it has been a long time since I have been able to get a new bird so I will
be cashing in on these!
Anyone interested in coming out to the property or needing information about
the Sora please feel free to call.
