[birdky] Snow Buntings, Campbell Co.

On Wednesday I decided that conditions were ripe to start up a "Snow Bunting
feeding station" at the W.Y.C. dredge disposal area. I put out about 5 pounds
of mixed seed and put some more atop the new snow yesterday. I got back to the
location at about 5 PM today, and lo and behold there were 36 winter-plumaged
SNOW BUNTINGS. These were apparently from a different part of the far north
than the ones that were here in January of 1999 (also attracted by feed) as
they repeatedly landed in the tops of the trees in the median. I have read
about
Snow Buntings perching in trees but I don't recall ever having seen it. They
also were rather skittish, so it might be a good idea to park at the east end
of the athletic field and scope them out from there. The feed is about 200' to
the east on a mound of dredge near the road just before the snow-covered boat
parking area. I figure the cost of the seed beats the gas that it would take
to run out to Indiana to see them otherwise. Also the Black Scoter was sleeping
with 30 Canada Geese right next to the Mike Fink's Gang Plank. I imagine
visitors could look right down on it as they went into the restaurant.
