Wednesday 5/23/07
268 slough, Horseshoe Road slough, Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake Unit,
Gentle Pond, Pond Creek Marsh
Highlights:
6AM to Noon
I started out at Horseshoe Road slough; walked in at the east end and
the west end. But did not spend a lot of time there: Semi-palmated
Sandpipers, Semi-palmated Plovers, 1 Mallard, 1 Dunlin, 1 Great Blue
Heron, 1 Great Egret.
Then Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake Unit (Union Co.) Great Egret, Wood
Duck family, Belted Kingfisher, Willow Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler,
Orchard Oriole.
Gentle Pond: Bald Eagle, Summer Tanager, Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
Pond Creek Marsh: 3 Common Moorhens calling, Bald Eagle 1 adult and 1
Juvie seen at nest, Red-shouldered Hawk, 4 Canada Geese with about 7
big Juvies, Swainson's Thrush.
Brainard and I apparently birded the Horseshoe Road slough on the
same day but did not meet up. He had more luck as reported by Mark
Monroe.
Thursday 5/24/07
Highland Creek Unit, Horseshoe Road slough, Shorebird Unit.
Highlights:
6AM to 2PM
I haven't been to Highland Creek (Union Co.) since midwinter so I
thought I would start out there for a change. Yellow-crowned Night
Herons 2, Red-shouldered Hawk, Turkey 2, 4, and 6, Turkey Vulture 14
flushed off of an oil-well tank, Red-headed Woodpecker 3 (they are
getting harder to find), Fish Crows several, Swainson's Thrush.
(While at Highland Creek it started off clear, clouded up and I got
20 minutes of light rain and then it cleared up again. It wasn't
supposed to do that today.)
With the possibility of a Red-necked Phalarope I headed off the
Horseshoe Road. I parked at the east end and walked all the way to
the west end and back. No Red-necked Phalarope spotted at all. I
haven't walked that distance there since sometime last year. Other
birds seen: Dunlin 6, Semi-palmated Sandpipers, Semi-palmated
Plovers, Mallard family, Canada Geese 25, Black-bellied Plovers 4 ( I
assume the same that I saw this past weekend), Savannah Sparrows 2.
Shorebird Unit: Great Egrets 5, Great-blue Heron 1
Charlie
Henderson Co.
