[birdky] Sloughs Monday & Thursday

Monday 5/28/07
6AM to 10AM  68º overcast rising to 78º partly cloudy

I covered Pond Creek Marsh, Hardy Slough, and the Shorebird Unit.

Highlights:

Green Herons 8 at Hardy Slough
Great Egrets 60+ roosting in the trees behind Hardy Slough and at Hardy Slough 
Bald Eagle
Bobwhite
Turkey
Semipalmated Plover
Semipalmated Sandpiper
Yellow Warbler

Thursday 5/31/07
6:30AM to 11AM 68º overcast rising to 72º (occasional very light rain)
I covered 268 slough, Horseshoe Road slough, Grassy Pond/Powell's Lake Unit, Sandbar on the Ohio (Union Co.) Hardy Slough, Pond Creek Marsh. 

Highlights:

Green Herons 6 at Hardy Slough
Great Egrets 40+ at Hardy Slough
Canada Goose: 2 at separate locations on the Ohio River!
Hooded Merganser family at GP/PL
Turkey Vulture on Sandbar
Bald Eagle
Semipalmated Plover
Semipalmated Sandpipers (100's at HRs, the ratio of S. Sandpipers to S. Plovers 10:1) 
Black-bellied Plover 1 at HRs
Spotted Sandpiper 1 at Sandbar
Dunlin 10 at HRs
Willow Flycatcher 2 at GP/PL
Fish Crow 2 at Sandbar
Blue Grosbeak at GP/PL
Note on Hardy Slough: The dam at the west end has been graded the full length (first time I have seen them do that.) Hardy Slough is in bad shape with lots of big dead fish floating on the pools of water. The woods behind Hardy Slough are being cut for lumber. I noticed they are also cutting down large dead trees (why I have no idea, unless they are clearing sight lines for a duck hunting blind.)
