[birdky] Sloughs Birding: Eagles!

Up to do some birding in the Sloughs this morning.

3/18/06 6:45 to 10:30AM
35º, clear, light north wind, turning high overcast later

There are now two Eagles nests. One north of the other, nearer Anderson Pond.
You can see both nests at the same time. A pair Bald Eagles at both nests.
At 6:45 I had two Immature Bald Eagles at Wood Tract.
Later 2 more Bald Eagles (Adults) perched south of Hardy Slough dike (I could find no nest for them).
If the two at Hardy Slough were separate from the the other 4 adults, that makes a total of 8 sighted.
Then when I got home after 11AM there was an adult Bald Eagle soaring over my house at the edge of town.
Add one more for a total of 9 this morning!

Other highlights:

A flight of 40 Double-crested Cormorants over Pond Creek Marsh.
A Redhead at 268 slough.
Wilson's Snipe 3 at Crenshaw Tract flooded area that has almost dried up.
Greater Yellowlegs 7 at Wood Tract.
Hairy Woodpecker & Yellow-bellied Sapsucker near Gentle Pond.
Tree Swallows over the dikes near the Eagles nests.
E. Phoebe by Gentle Pond.
Fox Sparrow singing by Gentle Pond.

On the walk to Pond Creek Marsh:
Brown Creeper 2
Winter Wren 1
Brown Thrasher 1
Golden-crowned Kinglet 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1

Duck numbers are way down. Blue-winged Teal numbers picking up.

At Anderson Pond the Lotus is coming up and will soon cover the surface again - no ducks seen.

I tried to get to Horseshoe Road slough but the Ohio is over the road near 1574.

I haven't seen any Tundra Swans since the 12th. And they haven't been hiding at Pond Creek Marsh where I hoped they would be.
