Tom Durbin and I spent the day in the area of the
Sloughs WMA in Henderson County. The clear skies and
light winds had many birds on the move, and we spent
much of the day doing a "sky high" watch with raptors
and waterfowl in view at all times. The conditions
were perfect, and we could hear the wind through the
wings of many of the flocks of ducks dropping in
before we saw them. We also checked the Ohio River
from hwy 268, and highlights from the day are listed
below.
Meeting Charlie Crawford after enjoying many of his
reports from the Sloughs.
Greater White-fronted Goose (several flocks totalling
approximately 115 birds. Tom spotted a fly-over flock
of 9 that we estimated at an altitude of
10,000-12,000')
All dabbler species including a female Blue-winged
Teal and a Mallard x American Black Duck hybrid.
Ring-necked Duck (few hundred)
Bufflehead (female on the river)
Common Loon (sky-high fly-over spotted by Tom)
Horned Grebe (2 on the river)
DC Cormorant (few riding drift on the river and
fly-over)
Great Egret (2 Hardy)
American Bittern (2 Hardy)
Red-tailed Hawk (Appr. 25 with an adult light-morph
calurus type at Hardy Slough)
Merlin ( Male fly-by at nearly eye level along the
lane at Hardy...so fast and close we could hear the
wind through the wings!)
Sora (calling at Pond Creek)
Greater Yellowlegs (2)
Dunlin (fly-by flock of 12-15 at Hardy)
Dowitcher species (single fly-by at shorebird
unit...probable Long-billed based on extremely long
bill...no shorebird habitat)
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (10-12 scattered)
Barn Swallow (Hardy)
House Wren (Pond Creek)
Gray Catbird (Pond Creek)
Fox Sparrow
Indigo Bunting
