My daughter and I checked for the sissor-tailed flycatchers below Barkley Dam
this afternoon. It only took a few minutes for Jessica, my sharp-eyed daughter,
to spot the male flying away on her drivers side of the vehicle while I was of
course checking the other side of the road. We drove a bit further south and
soon relocated the male where it had landed on one of the small planted trees
about 200 yds. south of the restroom building. The male repeatedly flew out to
catch insects returning to one of the near-by small trees to perch and watch
for the next passing insect. Emily, my 18 mo. old granddaughter, saw her first
great blue herons at a close distance as the herons fished and perched below
the dam. Emily managed to say "great blue" for the first time.
