[birdky] Sept. 3-5 pond birds

Sunday morning, my neighbor's drowned out soybean bottom just looked like a
dark mass in a sea of green to the naked eye. I was surprised when the scope
revealed 11 Canada Geese and a female Wood Duck and still lots of water, more
than 3 weeks after the big rain that filled this long dry pond bed.
Yesterday afternoon a calling Greater Yellowlegs flew over our place but
didn't land. I followed it as far as I could with binoculars and saw it join up
with a second individual - probably the reason it was calling.
This morning, on the way to town, we stopped at Brown's Pond. On the end
opposite our point of view, a Great Egret was resting on one leg with its head
tucked under its wing. I approached to within a couple of hundred feet. It
peaked out at me, then went on resting. My not too sharp photos revealed
something dangling from its tucked in leg, muddy fishing line, maybe?
A Pied-billed Grebe put in a brief surface appearance before we left.
