This was a really good bird weekend for mid-July. We counted 40 species,
which is the highest July weekend count in my records. We had a pair of
Bluebirds around all weekend. They were the first here in many months and a
delight to see. They were hanging around one of the nest boxes, which the
Tree Swallows have long since vacated to head off for holiday. I don't
remember the last time I counted a Crow; they are really unusual here this
time of year. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo continues to hang around and I
actually saw it twice this weekend. Maybe the most unusual find was at
least two Yellow Warblers, which I saw in the pond thicket several times
today. Several Bobwhites are calling nearly constantly and we're seeing
them often. It is dreadfully dry here and, as we've experience in the past,
dry weather means more hummingbirds at the feeders. I missed a flyover duck
that I didn't manage to identify and a Vireo that also would not stop long
enough to identify. We should be seeing Blue Jays and Blue Grosbeaks now,
but both are missing lately.
