What a difference three weeks makes! We counted only 35 species. After two
weekends away, our count was down by 15 and the birdlife and behavior was
completely different. The migrants are gone and birds seem quieter. We
seem to be settled into a summer pattern. The only real highlights were a
constantly-singing Orchard Oriole and the Northern Rough-winged Swallows,
which brought our swallow species count for the weekend to four. There are
juvenile Grackles, Thrashers and Mockingbirds seemingly everywhere and we
even watched three juvenile E. Meadowlarks tagging after foraging adults in
the yard. I don't recall seeing juvenile Meadowlarks here before; they are
distinctly smaller than the adults, yet are strong and agile fliers. Tree
Swallows are feeding young in both of our boxes.but our Bluebirds are
missing.
