We counted 40 species this weekend; one more than last week.  A flyover by a
group of five Great Blue Herons, last evening, along with
a-once-every-two-year look at a passing Belted Kingfisher, this morning,
were our highlights.  

I discovered another small owl pellet yesterday, in the flower bed just a
few feet from where I found the one last weekend.  It was also entirely baby
rabbit bones and fir.  This is more gratifying evidence that allowing
portions of our small property to "naturalize", is producing food for birds
in ways we had not anticipated!  We have seen many more rabbits in the last
few years and apparently nighttime visitors are keeping them in balance.  

Red-headed Woodpeckers. on Monday evening, after a violent tree-pruning wind
and rain storm, I was gathering small tree limbs from the lawn under our
post oak trees, when I stumbled onto an adult Red-headed, on the ground,
near the trunk of one of them.  It appeared dazed, was unable to fly and
barely able to hang on to the tree trunk, which it managed to keep between
us.  I called Debby and Katie, and together we were able to get good looks
at it.  It did not appear to be injured, but acted dazed and clumsy.  It
seemed inclined to stay on the ground, so we harassed it until it struggled
its way up to the lowest limbs of the tree.  We left it there, fearing that
it would not survive and convinced it was one of the nesting pair, from the
woodlot across the road.  Happily, I went out later and was unable to locate
it!?  Then, this weekend we have watched two very healthy looking Red-headed
woodpeckers, behaving very normally.  All is well that ends well, as they
say.but we'd really like to know what happened.
