Glad to read some people clarifying the situation with the sandhill crane hunting application process. One must be a licensed KY hunter who then may pay a mere $3 in order to have the opportunity to have one's name drawn and be awarded permission to kill 2 cranes during this inaugural hunting season. Additionally, the language of the regulation states that to secure a crane hunting permit/license and to report one has killed cranes via their honor system tele-check when one hasn't actually killed the cranes, is against the law. And with KDFWR staff part of this BirdKY forum, I will bet my farm that discussions here or posted at Sandhill Crane Coalition about buying hunting licenses and applying for crane hunting permits without killing cranes are being monitored and comments provided to KDFWR. Hawks are in the chicken coop.... Good crane fan in Barren River vicinity has determined that in spite of nothing posted at the state park's webpage for organized crane viewing opportunities, the Tourism Cabinet (Parks and KDFWR in same agency) has indicated they will in fact have two crane viewing weekends. Don't know if those dates have been determined. (may depend on the "hunt" effects) Finally, we had flocks of sandill cranes go gurgling over Franklin County two days ago prior to and at dusk in both ends of the county - all headed due south. One I saw was a big flock - maybe 50-60 and was flying in "M" pattern. I sure hope I get to see them on the ground in KY during the next few months. May be my last chance.....
