There were several thousand on the count yesterday, we had to drive around to a
lot to spot where they were roosting, because the lake is up a bunch- about 14
ft over winter pool. They roosted at Green Creek/Beaver Creek, Beaver Creek
Boat Ramp- Skaggs and Beaver Creek confluence, and on Peters Creek at the end
of South Lucas Rd. There lowering the lake about a foot a day so things should
stabilize in another couple weeks. There were a lot of SHCs flying around this
morning in all different directions. Best viewing is at Beaver Creek boat ramp,
hwy 252 bridge area over Beaver Creek. South Lucas Rd. and even parts of the
golf course at Barren River State Park that border the lake. If you want
beautiful sunset pictures with them in the forefront, then Beaver Creek Boat
Ramp is the best place. They came into the roost flying very high and later
than normal yesterday and mostly in long strings and not in Vs. There was some
“tornado/circling” type of behavior I call it, yesterday too, in which it is
thought they teach their young the topographical features of an area to
memorize a roost site/migration path. Don’t get to close to them while viewing
them, their spooky, and closer to the shoreline then normal with the lake up.

Just had a small flock fly over, 7:55 pm. Over Mt Washington. Did anyone else
hear them. Just barely saw them when they were overhead.

About 150 Sandhill cranes flew over my house in Glasgow, going due south, at
4:30 pm with a beautiful sunset as a backdrop.
Checked out Barren River Lake area this morning...Quarry Rd, below dam,
Bailey's Point, State Park, etc. No ducks; a few Pied-billed grebes and 3
Horned Grebes, along with Bonaparte & Ring-billed gulls. Not a Sandhill crane
to be found in the areas I drove by.
It started snowing on my way back home....did not last, but may have explained
why nothing was out & about.
