A male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher was seen perched on a
wire in the area reported yesterday shortly after my
arrival this morning. A female soon joined him, and a
vocal aerial display ensued. The female then flew to a
brace on a cross member of a nearby pole, and I was
able to watch her feed a young bird in a nest. At
least four young birds were subsequently seen begging
for breakfast. Wow, what excitement!
It was quite a pleasure viewing the flycatchers and
seeing them feed their half-grown young. I spent a
couple of hours watching and photographing them, and
was able to share the experience with Jackie Elmore.
They are gorgeous birds, especially in the air, as
they spread their wings and tail when flycatching or
displaying near the nest. They are also quite vocal,
and a nearby mockingbird is including their
vocalizations in his repertoire, which is really cool.
I would like to congratulate Jamie Quinn on the
initial sighting of a bird yesterday. Jamie certainly
deserves all the credit for the discovery of the nest.
I would also like to thank Steve White and Mark
Bennett for their prompt report and post to alert
others.
On another note, a Bell's Vireo was heard singing from
a nearby hillside, and is almost certainly on
territory. I don't believe this species has been found
nesting in Livingston County yet.
