Highlights from recent trips to the
Barkley/Kentucky/Smithland dams area are as follows:
September 16
White-rumped Sandpiper Little River/Barkley
Laughing Gull Smithland 5 4 juvs and 1 adult
Franklin's Gull Smithland 1st summer type
Caspian Tern 155+ Eddyville to dam 15 at Smithland
Scissor-tailed Flycat adult along 453 at bison area
September 21
Caspian Tern 200+ between Eddyville and dam including
170 at Kuttawa
Laughing Gull Smithland adult
Lesser Black-backed Gull adult above Ky Dam
I made a trip to the dams on September 26/27 to search
for hurricane birds. Rita apparently weakened enough
after making landfall to drop most birds along the
coast, and I observed no tropical species. It is
possible that a few stragglers could turn up though.
Species of interest include:
September 26
Arrived in time to see 7 Laughing Gulls fly over
Kentucky Dam on their way to roost.
September 27
Northern Shoveler Smithland 8
Merlin 1 male at Smithland 1 female at Ky Dam
Snowy Egret Kuttawa
Laughing Gull 12 5 at Ky Dam, 5 at Smithland, and 2
at Barkley Dam
Lesser Black-backed Gull adult at Kuttawa
Caspian Tern 190+ Kuttawa to dam w/150 at Kuttawa
Common Tern 10+ above Ky Dam 10+ at Smithland
Forster's Tern a flock of 110 dropped out above Ky
Dam
Black Tern Smithland
Nice yardbirds recently include:

Swainson's Thrush
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Lincoln's Sparrow Sep 27 and 28
