FULTON CO/LOWER HICKMAN BOTTOMS
Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers and Gadwall as well as scattered Great
Egrets and few Little Blues at Long Point. It rained most of the day and there
was a lot of standing water in the fields with a few scattered common
shorebirds.

There was a break in the rain and the skies lifted some during the early
afternoon. There were so many birds along the levee that the drive from Lake 9
to Hickman took over 2 1/2 hours. Riding along this stretch in early May
always makes me think of a drive through Oz with color bursts of mixed flocks
of Indigo Buntings and Baltimore and Orchard Orioles flushing from the levee
against a mist of blooming red clover. The chorus of Bobolinks renders the
experience even more unearthly. I encountered over 150 Bobolinks as well as a
female Hooded Merganser watching over her brood of six fluffballs tucked side
by side on a floating log drying out from the rain.
