As the sky cleared a raptor movement became evident in the afternoon and we 
spent some time doing a sky-watch.  We saw a Sharp-shinned Hawk hook a thermal 
and within minutes rise to over a mile in altitude. We were then treated to a 
spectacular vertical stoop by the bird which left us all dazzled.  It never 
moved a wing or broke stride from the beginning of the dive until it dropped 
out of sight beyond a distant tree line.

An interesting phenomenon occurred where at no time during the day was the sky 
not full of starlings hawking insects high in the sky from horizon to horizon.  
I've seen them do this many times but never in such numbers as there were 
literally many thousands.
