Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky (RROKI) is once again hosting
the Raptors on the River Conference here at the Executive West on
October 10th through 12th This years conference is lining up to be
another exciting and educational event.
While this is an all raptor conference it will be discussing
environmental issues that will be of interest to songbird
enthusiasts and conservation minded individuals.
Our keynote speaker on Saturday the 11th will be Dr. David M Bird
from the Avian Science and Conservation Centre, McGill University,
in Quebec Canada. Dr. Bird will be discussing the American
Kestrel; a bird that many people are unaware is on the decline.
Dr. Bird was the keynote speaker at the American Kestrel Symposium
at Hawk Mountain in 2007.
In addition we will have Betty O Leary from the Carolina Raptor
Center who will be discussing Feather Identification and Aging of
Birds, and Anne Miller from the Alabama Wildlife Center whose
paper will cover re-nesting of birds. Anne has developed a
wonderful CD of bird calls-raptors as well as other avian
species-that aids in reuniting hatchlings with their natural
parents,
Sundays keynote speaker is the one I am the most excited about.
Dr. Ward Stone, New York State Wildlife Professional of 2008. Dr.
Stone has been the New York state pathologist for 40 years,
dealing with everything from rabies to West Nile Virus. Dr. Stone
has addressed the United Nations twice regarding pesticides in our
environment and their impact on wildlife. He has also published
over 100 scientific papers. Dr. Stone will be discussing
Pesticides, Rodenticides and Avian Botulism. There have been
several massive die offs of waterfowl due to Botulism across the
country. This should be a very interesting topic.
The RROKI board has decided to open the conference up to members
of the general public and to offer a special rate for people just
wanting to attend part of the conference and not attend the
banquet or be eligible for any door prizes. We think the speakers
are so impressive that we would like to give more people the
opportunity to hear them speak. The regular conference rate is
$100 but we are offering a student rate of $25 and a rate of $30
for members of the general public.
If any of you are interested in a registration form please email
me privately at raptors@xxxxxxxxx
I hope some of you will join us.
