Another Selasphorus hummingbird has been reported, this one in southern
Jefferson County. I will see if the landowner minds visitors this
afternoon. Donny Parker has confirmed it to genus level.
A Monk Parakeet showed up at a feeding station just north of Berea, Madison
Co., 13-14 November 2002. It has not been seen since. I don't know if
anyone is ever going to want to count Monk Parakeets in Kentucky, but as far
as I'm concerned, we'll never be able to tell if birds here are "wild"
vagrants or just local escapes. And even if they are "wild" they are not a
native species. There have been a handful of reports of this species over
the years.
I forgot to mention in an earlier post that I didn't see a SINGLE American
Coot yesterday. I suppose some were around in flocks on Saturday, but I
wonder where the heck THEY were in this big push???? Mid-November is
typically the PEAK time for this species' fall migratory movement through
the state.
