[birdky] RPT: West Ky, May 29

Amy and I visited a number of locales today, May 29th.  We had camped at
Pennyrile State Forest and awoke to a din of Whip-poor-wills and
Yellow-billed Cuckoos; overnight we heard all three common owls.

Highlights: 

Lake Barkley above the dam -- no Western Grebe; first-year Franklin's Gull
w/ a Herring on the largest of the two islands; 20+ Lesser Scaup; female Com
Goldeneye; f. Hooded Merganser; 1 P-b Grebe; 2 Amer Coot.

Ky Lake above the dam -- 8 Lesser Scaup; 1 basic Common Loon; 1 Herring
Gull; 5+ Ring-billed Gulls

Smithland Dam tailwaters -- 5 Black Terns; 36+ Least Terns

Union County Peabody Coal Plant -- 1 m. Ruddy Turnstone w/ commoner
shorebirds including sev. White-rumps. 

Horseshoe Road slough -- pair Least Terns (acted territorial, flying over us
with agitated call notes); 3 Black-bellied Plovers; 75+ Semi Plover; 125+
Semi Sp; copulating pair of Spotted Sandpipers!; 1 Least Sp; 8 Dunlin; 3
White-rumped Sp; 2 Lesser Yellowlegs; Mallards; brood of Hooded Mergs w/
mom.

KY 268 Slough -- 1 Black-bellied Plover; 50+ Semi Plovers; 15 White-rumped
Sps; 50+ Semi Sp; 2 Dunlin

Ellis Park Slough -- 75-100+ Semi Sp; 10 White-rumped Sp; 1 Spotted Sp; a
few Semi Plovers.
