[birdky] RPT: West Ky August 25-26

Ben & Mary Yandell and myself made a tour of several spots in western KY
over the weekend. Highlights included

SAT

Paradise: 2 Ruddy Turnstones and a Sanderling.

Camp Mines in Union County: a flock of 21 Black Terns, a few hundred
Blue-winged Teal and 11 species of shorebirds (including single S-b
Dowitcher and Stilt Spiper, and a couple of Westerns).

Eddy Creek, Lake Barkley: shorebirds were distant as the lake has only
recently begun to drop enough at this spot to expose shoreline, but
there were a mix of common waders and shorebirds including a Stilt
Spiper.

Mitchell Lake vic, Ballard WMA: 8 Dickcissels in a loose group at the
Sedge Wren colony; 10 spp shorebirds including a Buff-breasted Spiper;
and more Black Terns; Pectoral Spipers and common peeps may number 500+
birds?.

SUN

Swan Lake WMA: only a few shorebirds, but the cool morning had songbirds
moving and the lighting and the lakes/cypress trees was wonderful.

Laketon area on the Miss River: we knew the river was up and shorebirds
would likely be absent (and they were); however, raptors including
numerous Miss Kites (including a few juvs) and Broad-wingeds highlighted
this portion of the trip.

Fish Pond, Fulton Co (where we met up with Hap Chambers): 250 Great
Egrets and a few Great Blues were still working the nearly-dry pools
that will be gone in a few days.
